Supplements. Do I need them?

Everyone loves supplements. What can make you faster, stronger, glowing, healthier? But do you need them? Ironically, supplements and vitamins can actually be detrimental and harmful if you take too high of a dosage or if they are just not for you. Before taking any supplement consult with your physician to determine 1) whether you need to take a supplement 2) what supplements are best for you. Some supplements interfere with the effectiveness of your prescription medications. Other supplements need to be stopped prior to undergoing a medical procedure. Always fully inform your physician of each and every supplement you take, and this includes vitamins. Your doctor may want to order blood work to check certain levels such as Vitamin D and Iron before recommending a vitamin or supplement. There is the risk of toxicity from certain vitamins such as vitamin D which can result in GI upset, calcium buildup (hypercalecemia), kidney stones, and other complications.

For myself, I take Biotin for hair, skin and nails (I prefer Sports Research made with Coconut Oil, 10,000 mcg daily) and Elderberry with Zinc and Vitamin C (I use Zeal Naturals Sambucus, 500 mg per day) for immune system boost. I try to incorporate a daily multivitamin as well.

Another factor to consider is if you are an athlete and subject to drug testing trough the NCAA, professional leagues, WADA etc. You are responsible for what you put in your body. Always clear your supplements with the proper governing body before ingesting. Many supplements sold at popular chain stores contain substances not listed on the label and some contain banned substances. You can never be too careful.

Bottom line: do your research and consult your physician before starting any supplement or vitamin regimen.
